New petition from bereaved parent asks publisher to reconsider release of game. Despite being moved back to April 2006, Rockstar's Bully remains one of the most controversial titles of the moment - with the game now the subject of an emotive petition from the mother of a teenager who committed suicide after being bullied.

Sad... just sad...

... I think Rockstar is just about to be sued to death, if you ask me...

Part of the problem here is no one has actually played the game, but Rockstar has a reputation for games that allow you to do things that are less-than-moral if you want.

The official description of the game, and screenshots like the one below DO give the impression this is a game where you can beat up children in a realistic way.

If Bully does feature that, I think it's way too close to reality to be tasteful.

I don't think it should be banned, partly because that would just make the game sell even more and make Rock Star out to be some kind of martyrs, and partly because they do have the right to publish whatever they want as long as it doesn't cause any proven harm to anyone.

But I do think it makes Rockstar look like a bunch of cynical w***ers who are willing to exploit any kind of human misery for the sake of free publicity.

Imagine if Rockstar came out with a simulation of the Columbine massacre, that's the kind of level they're operating on now, and they don't care if they offend vulnerable people because it all just adds to their sales.

this is bad....this'll make the game even more popular.
nobody should comment before actually playing the game:smileysad:
GTA:SA sold evn better when it was neck deep in the hot coffee scandal,i think this game is headed the same way but without the hot coffee

After putting up with bullying of varying forms throughout the majority of secondary school (i.e. year 7 - sixth form) I can see how and why this game is going to cause offence.

Grand Theft Auto is one thing... stealing cars, shooting people, running people down, blowing things up - yes it does happen in real life but its not the kind of thing kids/teens are going to go off and do after playing a GTA game.

Kids and teens on the other hand will find it much easier to incorporate into their everyday life the kind of things (from what I've seen) they will be doing in Bully, a game that looks as though its going to glorify making other people's lives pure misery. No doubt the game will receive an 18 certificate, but since when has that stopped younger people playing?

Funny Krisse how you talk about 'Nobody has even played the game'... yet you convict the game yourself...
You 'presume' that it comes way to close to reality...
Funny that games shouldn't come close to reality... why is that?? Why shouldn't reality be part of a gaming world...

You don't see fantasie mixing up our daily lives...

And already you presume that Rockstar is a bunch of w****ers for the sake of free publicity... Well hello, in what kind of world do you live?? It's 2005 and trust me... There are much worse things the a game for gods sake!!

Remember the game 'Hooligan' on pc?? All parents, schools, and even religious institutes were all going crazy and mad about that game...... Guess what... the game came out... it became a great hit....... and that's it.... No extra hooliganisme, fights or whatever...

GTA SA same story... do you see more drive by's?? More violant, cursing etc etc?? I don't think so...

And what if rockstar came with the columbine massacre?? do YOU really think that a game is the problem to all of this??? Aren't thinking about all the guns that are LEGAL in the states?? Isn't that the problem??
Everybody is legal to carry a gun in the states and YOU think that it is immoral that a game is violent ROLFLMFAO!!!!!!!

Stay close to reality plzzzzzzzz these are just games........

I got to agree with Stax a bit Krisse. Also the worst game i have seen is Postal, based on a real life accident of a postal worker going crazy and kiIIing several people, then committing suicide. They make a game of it comes quite a big hit (and it's a pretty fun game, played the demo) But got banned every where i think.

Bully looks like an excellent game, looks really fun, i hope this petition doesn't go through. I've been waiting for this game since announcement.

Anyway all they care about is sales and money like any business, and if this is what it takes, then go ahead R* you have my support.

Kudos!

All I will say on the subject is that Sam and Dan Houser the minds behind Rockstar have always believed that Games are a medium that is just as valid of artistic expression as Movies, Art and Music. You only have to look at their games to see that there is genuine talent there that is screaming out to be recongnised just like any Tarantino blockbuster. Midnight Club, Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Revolver and Manhunt have litterally re-defined gaming in the current gen. Compare them to the equivalent Hollywood titles The Fast and the Furious, Heat/Scarface/Boyz n the Hood, The Good the Bad and the Ugly and While Manhunt has no equivalent you can get pieces from The Warriors, The Running Man and many others.

Not one of those Hollywood titles was attacked in the way Rockstar has been and both Sam and Dan have found this immensely frustrating over the years. Hence they have adopted an attitude lately of "Well if you are going to complain about that then HERE look at this!!!". For some reason everyone is comparing Bully to the legendary Brittsh film SCUM and that is just not fair until we see the final verdict. Bully could just be a new version of Grange Hill (starring Tucker of course :smileywink: ) we just dont know and there is no reason to lay judgement on the game till it is finished.

One more thing I will add. With the execption of Midnight Club and Smugglers Run all Rockstars games are aimed at a mature audience. If we can have 18 rated films that children are not allowed to watch like Henry: Portrait of a serial Klller, Pulp Fiction, Romper Stomper and Football Factory along with even cartoons/anime (Try letting your 6 year old watch The Legend of the Overfiend2!!!) then why can't there be Adult games? The gaming industry has matured and the biggest consumers are now in the 18-26 age bracket so why cant they have games aimed at them? Farenheit is a great start a mature game with nothing much in the way of violent or sexual content but that is only one example. Rockstar have led the way in targetting the older audience and should be applauded for it. The people who are really to blame are the governments for making Gaming a scapegoat for their own shortcomings and Parents. Time and time again Mothers approach me with a copy of GTA: SA, I say do you know the content is unsuitable for children and they reply "Whatever".

Interestingly I young woman I knew to talk to came into the shop yesterday and was buying her 8 year old GTA: VC. I took her aside and said you know this is full of stuff not or kids right? She replied "It's only a game", I said that you do realise it has an 18 classification? Then I said would you let your son watch Debbie does Dallas? She was shocked! I didn't sell her the game. There should be less finger pointing and more educating, most parents do not realise the content of games and I bet if they did the problem would dissapear along with Senator Cintons arguements.

I think this game should get a rating of AO and limited distribution, but not a ban. Ppl seem to know that this game is offensive, but dont know how to put it into words, well, this is those words. Eh-hem...-"In all forms of media, the harming of CHILDREN has never been showcased in a distasteful manner, and it is wide belief that this gaming is making, for the first time, violence towards CHILDREN an objective."- For this reason, R* might have just found the line of what society will allow, or simply cope with... And they might have also crossed it.
